Indian Marriage Customs

Every bride and groom aspires to have the most memorable morning of their lives at their wedding. There are many different things you can do to make your big day special and specific for you, but there are a few classic components that must be present for an Indian bride to become genuinely authentic.

The groom is escorted down the aisle during the Baraat, or entrance of the groom, on either the shoulders of his friends or a white horses. He is dressed in a spectacular hat with an ornate Kalgi brooch and an subtle sherwani suit. The guys typically carry a tray of puffed grain to supply to the holy fire as they go, and he is accompanied by his community.

The wedding is welcomed by her groom’s relatives upon entering and led to the Mandap, or symbolic building, where she will be waiting for her future father. A mangalsutra, which is essentially a gold necklace with ebony beads, is placed around the bride’s throat as the few exchange Milni Malas, or flower wreaths. Additionally, he recites Ancient mantras that call upon Soma, Gandharva, and Agni to bestow his new partner with stamina, youth, beauty.

The final act of the meeting, known as kanya daan, or the bride’s giving ahead, is a very shifting event. The wife dips her feet in a dairy and crimson concoction to symbolize accepting her position as the nose of her home while the couple’s family holds her close and showers him with gifts of clothing and jewelry. She then calls upon Lakshmi, the goddess of love, attractiveness, and prosperity, leaving reddish footprints on the ground.
